Photo of the clinch valley cornet band. Tazewell, Virginia. Photo probably dates to the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Context: Cornet bands were popular during the later 1800's and consisted of brass insruments and also possibly percussion instruments such as drums + cymbals. These bands were formed in many towns + cities and gave concerts and performed at other local events. The concert is a brass valved instrument similar to a trumpet.
